Cabin Fever Reliever

I'm back after a much needed break from winter and our routines.   Talk about a cabin fever reliever, it was wonderful.

Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine, FL
photo edited through Waterloque, a new app that treats your photos as if they are water colored.
Where did I go you ask,  DH and I went to the Sunshine state to visit  Mom.  The weather was perfect.  70 going towards 80  degree weather with sunshine.  Oh you forgot what that looked like.  We did too with all this polar vortex and really bitter cold temperatures it seems like the whole nation is experiencing this year.   Besides reconnecting with Mom, we were laying in sunshine, swimming, shopping, sightseeing and did a whole lot of eating.    All wonderful.

Each day Mom would use her bed as a design wall for a quilt she's been working on and I felt like I had my own personal viewing to a quilt show.

This quilt Mom made from her scrap bin and the photo treated also with Waterloque.  This quilt  is her normal decor there.
She also made a ragged fringed pillow that sat on the chair to the right of her bed with yellow, blue and a few other scraps and it turned out cute !
I still have over 100 hundred photos of our trip, but need to find out how to export those onto my computer quicker than sending each one via email on the phone.  Perhaps later this week I can make/find the time.

We're back to our routine already transporting grandchildren to preschool and speech, and my days are already a blur.
As for my own projects, I did finish a book, When I Found You by Catherine Ryan Hyde.  What a nice story and without giving a spoiler, near the end I had tears steaming down my face.  Of course it was at 11 pm in bed when I woke  DH up with my sniffles.  He couldn't believe I was crying while reading my kindle and seemed a tad exasperated as he rolled over.   LOL,   but I did get it done.
The other project I worked on was some embroidery.  That Valentine Wool kit I made up near the 11th was worked on and I was able to get some of the stitching done but not all, perhaps this week I can finish the embroidery.

Mom and I had a day to spend by ourselves and went to a beautiful quilt shop in Temple Florida.  The Suwannee Quilt shop was in a complex of other shops containing stained glass, cross stitch, antiques and a tea house all owned by the same woman.  Can you cay incredible and how nice they all were.  We both shopped but would you believe neither of us bought any fabric!  That was a first, oh.... I take that back, Mom did buy 3 fat quarters for refrigerator magnets she's making but neither of us bought any yardage.  If you know us you'd know how remarkable that statement really is.  We both are trying to use what we have and have made a pact to chart our fabric stash, both with usage and with gains so I'll be joining Judy Laquidera with her stash reports for the remainder of the year.    I fell in love with 2 different fabric lines while there and did actually photograph one of the selvage edges so I can acquire it later at some point if it's still haunting me and I'm thinking now that I should have bought it.  It was "Rio" by Paintbrush Studio 120-685.  What colors and how gorgeous.

Looking at it still, I just might order it and have them ship it to me.  Perhaps I could use it as an incentive to get 2 projects done then reward myself.  Mom helped me out by saying if you buy it are you going to have to find a place to store it or are you going to use it?   Hanging my head, I admitted I have several UFOs started that I want/NEED  to finish first and won't allow myself anything until some of these are done.  I'll wrestle with myself further with this and come up with something shortly.

While at The Villages we also enjoyed a quilt show in a neighboring town, a Vintage Car Rally at one of the Public Squares, the Harmonicats, another night at the Square for their 241 specials besides a trip to The World of Beers (DH became an honorary member), The Eisenhower Rec Center sharing many war memorials and service memorabilia, and a day trip to St.Augustine where we drank from Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth. The Trolley Tour  that we enjoyed in other cities (Boston, Philadelphia, London, etc...) wasn't as good as we thought it would be. Seemed really touristy and had to circle the same blocks over and over again seeing the same sights to be pointed out but to a different building.  All the points of interest were very close together and interesting but could have been shone better without all that repetition I think.    It may have been a timing issue to spread at that many trolleys.  We also enjoyed a great lunch at Columbia, a Cuban restaurant with that 1905 dressing, Yum!

It's nice to be home and back to routines but I surely could use some more of that 70 degree weather.
Jacque aka "Snoodles" at Lily pad quilting is hosting a sweet giveaway for a Winter time Cabin Fever reliever.  Go check it out via this link and join in on the fun.

Will share more on another day, got to run.

Two done so far this Month and gardens..

It's seems really difficult for me to make up titles for these postings and sometimes seems like the simplest phrase works best.  But I'd be interested in how you would title this post.  Any and all ideas are welcome, just leave a comment with your suggestion or if you think this is good enough.

Anywhoo, I was able to get 2 items off my get it done for June list.   The first is the Tea Wallet.

I used the free pattern available from Free Spirit called Break Buddy and only changed the placement of the upper folded piece to rest higher when the wallet is closed and am very happy with the results.
That being said though, if I did make another one, I think two skinny  flaps sewn into the top edge to cover the opened pockets would be a huge plus since the tea bags I use do not come in their own foiled pouch.

There are four pockets and about 8 of my regular tea bags fit nicely or 6  of my regular bags and these 3 ice tea mixers, NICE!  I've had this project on my horizon since I went to quilt camp back in April.  It was so easy and quick!   Note to self, this will make a great little gift so I should make several up and have them ready when someone needs a pick me up or I need a little personalized gift.

Finally I re found the site where the pattern is, it can be found here it's no longer available at Free Spirit but at the designer's blog, http://100billionstars.com, Melissa Peda.

The other finish is another Lil' Miss Shabby BOM that I started I'm not even sure when!   Perhaps it was February while I was still visiting my Mom in Florida perhaps.  This one is so longggggg overdue.   (Notice the whine!)  Now I only have 2   more blocks to go then I can start cutting into the fat quarters I've had in for this and do some assembling.

I finally was up yesterday after another bout with a viral /sinus/ stress overload.  I went for help and the Doc placed me on antibiotics and this bug knocked me off my feet for 2 days.  I slept around the clock and slept most of the next day too.  It's good to be feeling better again.  So yesterday I actually had the energy to stroll around the yard taking some photos of the landscape before the predicted rains came.

Glad I did.  Here's a gander:

Taken from the side.

Taken from the front of the house.
See how they are cascading over the landscaping curbs.

Here's what those same bushes looked like on Sunday,
just getting ready to show their colors.

Lucky for me I had the camera ready when our pool guys showed up. :)

DH and PGS#3 getting the pool ready for the season.

This one is so easy on the eyes and what a worker.
PGS#3, age 4
Pool actually doesn't look too bad for surviving an Adirondack Winter.

See what I mean, look at that concentration.

In the back yard the snowball bush is looking the best it has since well for evah!  Every year those schaeffer beetles forage anything white and I think they think this bush is an all you can eat buffet planted just for them.

Nice to see it in it's glory this year and those deep fuchsia rhododendrons.  I hope all the forecasted rain doesn't damage them like they did the dark pink tree peonies.

The little pink Rhodes that are in front and on the side of the house are gone and just the skeletal remains are evident, thanks to the last week of rain we had that beat them and all the blooms off the flowering crab tree out front.

How they look now, versus how they were on the 18th of May.

There are also some white Rhodes I planted on the path to the river, but they are nowhere near blooming yet.   I share more garden pics at another time.  It is looking so pleasant outside with all our efforts but there are several more areas that need some TLC whenever I find the time that is.

Now it's time to get this house back under control.  Anytime I am down, I swear this place just implodes without my care.  Now however does that happen?  lol   As if I wasn't aware.  At least when I am up, people are more conscientious of the messes and clutter.

One last bit I'd like to share is about Martingale has a link which shares 52 tips and tutorials.   Help yourself to check it out and earmark it for your own convenience.  A lot of good information is freely shared.

TTFN and Good Night,

National Quilt Day 2013

Happy Quilting Day be it called National or to me it would be better as International Quilting Day since I have many friends across the borders who participate in this event too.  SewCal Gal is hosting a "sew-cial" and invites quilters to share bits about themselves during this hop.  What else could I say but sure, I'll share what I can.   I have many errands to do and  run today so the time spent sewing will be happening this evening.

But I will share a current embroidery project that I'm stitching needs to be ready for March 22nd since that's the day my project for this upcoming Stitch Me Up hop will be shown.  This hop is one that MadammeSamm from Sew We Quilt and Jane (lol - I call her the other Jane-tehehe) from Jane's Fabrics  is hosting.  It kicks off on Wednesday the 20th then runs through to the 29th.    I love these blog hops and usually am so inspired and even amazed at the different levels of creativity with the projects made and shared.  Of course I won't show you mine yet, that would be cheating and this is just a tease!

My other focus today will be finishing a counted cross stitch piece.  And I mean finish.  Last weekend I found some trims at Joanns Fabrics and think it will work out nicely.   Cross that off my list, where ever did I put it????   Oh well I have plenty of other projects hovering ever near.
I'll come back and post my progress along the day.
TTFN, I'm off to play!

March Forth!!

Couldn't resist, lol.   Finished a little counted cross stitch "zipper kit" from Bent Creek called Santa's Reindeer  that I've been wanting to do since..... forever!  Seems out of theme for March.  Guess I'll be packing it away first.  I'm off to find appropriate fabrics  and trims.

Not entirely satisfied with his eyes.  I may pick them out and replace them.
The pattern called for the same green as the reindeer harness.

See I'm ahead of the game.   This wasn't even on my radar at the end of last month but I just happened to fall in love with 24  the TV series with Keifer Sutherland and I am addicted to it.  It's hard for me to stop when one episode stops because it's precariously leads onto another dramatic ending that I need to see what happens next then bingo, full tilt into the next episode.  Thus needing to have my hands busy while I enjoyed them.  There are a total of 193 episodes and perhaps I'm on 124 or something like that.  I just wish I could watch it via Netflix in my sewing room.  Imagine all the projects I could get done in there while watching.

I also have been playing around with a new FO for the "Stitch Me Up" Blog Hop occuring March 20-29th.   Here's the lineup.

A little something I've been wantin....

To Have.

                       To Do.

                                               To Get Done.

VOILA- a new pincushion with detachable ORT bag.

Of course it's also a tool holder that now sets right next to my sewing machine.   So easy to use now and convenient too.  Perfect!

I found the tutorial for this at Sew Mama Sew which Elizabeth Hartman graciously shared with all.  I only adjusted the pattern just a bit. Specifically, the dimensions and how I assembled the tool holder, the  loop and the pincushion construction by layering the wool on top of my side pieces with an appliqued  top  stitch then catching the other set of parallel sides with a typical seam.
I also opted not to make the "loop" but used a hairband instead.  I sewed it just under the pincushion with zig zag stitching.  While doing this I reasoned that the metal clasp would hold up better and be easier to use, thus that section of the hairband is visible when the bag is off yet hidden when it's assembled and in use.
As for the tool holder, I wanted to have the upper pocket have just a  hint of contrast so it would be easier to see the opening.  Of course the stripe fabric I wanted to use  had the wrong orientation stripe  for the size needed so I assenbled that black print so it would be on the inside of my pocket allowing the rest to be the lime stripe.  Recognize any of the fabric?  Quite a few are from Malka  Dubrawsky's line "Stitch In Color" that I fell in love with adding some other pieces I had in.   The bright aqua is a Jenny Beyer and the fly print, I'm not sure but was one I just thought could be fun so grabbed a fat quarter while shopping at Stitched in Williston Vt..

Last spring instead of going to my usual quilting retreat, there were too many things going on at the time and the price was just too much to justify with the income, I decided to stay home.  Feeling so neglected and actually getting into a bit of a pout  I stopped by my Bernina Dealer (Stitched) while DH had his Cardiology appointment in Vermont.  I ordered a specialized foot and base plate to do needle punch on my Bernina 440.   The owner Jenn was more than happy to help me out and mailed the part she had to special order as soon as it came in.  It's been hanging around here just waiting for me to make time to try it out.

I finally made time to play and it works beautifully.    What do you think?
The E stands for either Eileen or Emerson, my first and last names.

Recently, I found this blog which has many  inspirations.  Quiltyworthy,  Bags and otherstuff, check it out if you have time.

I have another idea from a different tutorial I found.  Here's a peek of what I'll be fondling  using.   lol
Enjoy your day,  Jane
