February 2021 OMG

It's too late to link up with Elm Street Quilts however, I plan to finish January's leftover Pilgrim  wall  hanging as well as the Sewing machine pincushion photo below, and get the Kim Diehl BOM finished from last year that needs layering quilting and finishing (photo will be shared later).

Bernina 440 stitched embroidery with the  metallic thread, no problem except the wonkiness from the user artistic license placing that spool of thread on the top.
Which will stay as it is and how when I was starting out (age  7) the spool on top would "dance" with me going as fast as I could bringing up fond memories.   LOL

Below are a few of the tools I use for tracking the needles.

This first tool - the Needle Tracker lets me know which needle is in the machine as there used to be (esp. pre co-vid times) elongated times that I endured no machine sewing.   I keep this just beneath my sewing machine, handy but not in the way.

The next is a needle wallet to store some unique needles I use.  Like Joan Shay's appli-bond, titanium and those chrome needles I just received from Schmetz.   I store this on top of my needle container shared in my last post.

This last tool is placed on the same needle storage box in the top drawer and is for lightly used needles that still have more life left in them.  It even has blank spaces that I can customize the type and write on or off for special notations.  I call this my needle parking garage.

Thought I'd share a glimpse of how I organize some of those parts of my hobby not yet shared.

Managing and Tending Leftover Threads

With the assortment of threads I use with my needle arts, for many of them I contain them in a DMC box on bobbins with a "like with Like" mentality.  Seems simple, but it works for me.  As shared previously on this post:  my DMC are all bobbin wound and stored in containers so it's easy to find the thread I'm looking for when starting a project.

When I got into  working with wool and needing the heavier threads I found it easier to  use bobbin buddies while stitching to eliminate any Perle cotton thread tangles yet store them within their weight classes in the compartmentalized boxes after their use.  The warmer colors in one or two containers with cooler colors in another.  Labeling the boxes with their weights 5, 8 or 12.  Then I have another container to hold the specialty fibers such as watercolour/snow/metallics and some of the DMC leftover bits.

I purchased a bobbin die for my Sizzix Big Kick and love how it works for making cardboard bobbins.  When done stitching a project, Typically I'll print out the design I stitched and will use that image glued on one side of a bar coaster and oak tag heavy duty paper glued on the back side.
You heard that right, a bar coaster.  It's heavy duty enough to hold up to use/abuse with those heavier threads, looks nice and an easy reminder of where I used that particular thread to bout.

I note the type of thread with the color name and number on the oak tag side of the bobbin and store it in a case that's not quite deep enough for them to stand upright in unless they're tilted a tad in the compartment.   I don't go through a lot of these as I just make one to however many more are needing a bobbin when finishing a project.  When asking the bar/restaurant owners and managers if they mind if I take one or two while eating out at their establishments, they'll respond positively to my request - thankfully.

The DMC and Valdani 8 and 12 that I use as they are sold on the ball skeins (how they come) and when in use I will store the balls in the bobbin buddies (seen in the first photo setting on the very top proortion of that stack of plastic boxes in a netted bag)  I purchased those through Bird Brain Design many years ago.  She is selling little glass jars now to contain the skeins of thread with a jar lid having a centered hole.  I don't see the style I use as available anymore on line anywhere, but they are similar to the "toy coin machines" with the colorful capped bubbles with a little prize inside.  The only difference is that there is a hole drilled into the bubble part to allow the thread to be pulled out when needed.  You can actually see those ball skeins in the first photo shared and stored in either warm or cool color combos.  I also love the Wunderlist app on my smart phone (now known as Check it app) to document which brand, color and weight threads I already have on hand.   I use this app for my Accuquilt dies, threads, etc..... I  LOVE IT!!

Recently I thought of color coding my hobbies so am using Orange for Needlepoint.  Anything to help me easily transition from one project to the next besides know at a glance which bag to grab as I head out the door is a boon in my life.   This is probably way more info than you need or want to know, it's just how I roll.

I have a whole different system I use for Eleganza (my Sue Spargo) threads I'm using on my current wool project but that  topic is for another day!  Share more later.

Desires for December

With the major Holiday fast approaching there's a calmness I have with knowing that all will get done.  Just by doing bits at a time, it will be achievable, hehe.....(and delegating)

it's the same principal as how I mention how do you eat an elephant?

One Bite At a Time!  (Or as with Trudy, moving that paper clip)

That being said there seems to be more done when I list my intentions down and this will be my format this year.
  • This week I plan on getting the outdoors decorations up like the wreaths, garland and even candles in the windows.  Then I'll start the Christmas cards and greetings.
  • Of course there will be shopping, cooking, and candy making included for tasks needing done.
  • As for traveling, we need to visit the eldest grandson at his school in Ma., Christmas concerts (I love!!), Christmas Services, Holiday parties and gatherings with friends I also love.
  • Taking care of all of that besides progressing on my creative endeavors and the want to get done lists.  So the December's list in that arena will contain:

1- Quilt that Horse quilt PGD#1 made for the boy in Nicaragua. This I'll slate as my December's challenge for ALYOF.  It is resting on the sewing table relaxing so I hope to get to that this coming week.   YIPPEE! Done, see this link...
2- Teach PGD#1 how to bind it.   Done on the above link and project.
3- Quilt then Bind the Community Project quilt for WFQG.
4- Stitch four more blocks on the current CXS Lizzie Kate, Winter Alphabet.  Progressing nicely.
5- Make 2 more doll/stuffed animal quilts.
6- Start the new QAL with Bonnie Hunter Mystery, Grand Illusion. Yep, going to jump on that boat and try to keep up with the steps for each week. Maybe not get all the units sewn but started so it'll be in bits unti I can get caught up, I have to be realistic about this. Perhaps a baby quilt size.......hehehe.  Also am thinking of changing the colors a bit too time wll tell, Yellow, pink red and green with the black and white sounds yummy doesn't it.
7- Make trash containers for the car, these should be such a quick project that I'll use this project as my NewFO for December, the last one, she's giving these up to concentrate on UFOs next year.  Barb Stanbro who has been hosting this at Cat Patches blog gets so much accomplished each month.  She's amazing.  If you have time, check out her posts and the quilting she's currently doing on the "Gardeners Quilt".
8- Using another wild card or 2,3  4  for myself as my #8 entry, making things like a tea cozy, assist making a Library card holder and bag for PGD#1, new table runner with a Christmas fabrics for Living Room,  etc....  we'll see.
9- Exercise 20 minutes a day at least for 5 days a week.
Could you tell I was an over achiever in school? It's either that or am I just plain NUTS? It seems like quite a large list to get to and I know it'll be a challenge but I am also ever optimistic.

We went to see the Holiday Train last night when it went through town and despite the deep cold, it was  enjoyable.  The Canadien Pacific Holiday Train is another tradition we've embraced in the past several years.  The grand children love seeing it and the idea of giving food for those less fortunate embodies the season of giving.   As I sign off it's only fitting to quote a train by chanting,  I think I can, I think I can, I think I can .........toot toot!

I need to run, the ladies of our family are attending a party at 5pm with oils and fragrances and I love learning new ideas.

December beginnings and November's New FO.....

Was  away for Thanksgiving and now that I'm home am getting the home ready for Christmas.  My creativity has hit a slump recently and  it's been slow progress with several UFOs.   My lungs are also giving me their usual fits that happens at this time of year too.

After receiving an order from Annie's Catolog with items I thought could be helpful with marking the "Tweet Camping quilt" that I'd like to quilt more in three different area.  I received the Sullivans 6 in 1 marking pencil, not sure if I like this yet) and the Clover quilting transfer mesh.
My ideas for more quilting on this quilt is"
  1.  the brown sashing with a diamond row,
  2. the wild print of birds fabric using either a small meander or quilt the outlines of the birds and flowers it contains
  3.  the stacks of four blocks to be quilted with an X in each.
Since some of it is quilted, the measurements are a bit off and I'm trying to find the easest and best way to mark those diamond rows in that dark brown.  Wish me luck!

The lil' MIss Shabby June block is almost done.
Only the flowers left to sew after they get marked (ah hum... for the fourth time that is!).

Started this next project in November as a NEW FO.  It's a counted cross stitch fob from Shephards Bush design called Scaredy Sheep.  It's been on my want to do some day list for several years so with
Barb's New FO challenge, seems to be just the right push for me to start something new, thanks Barb!

While cleaning up to decorate I thought of hiding my CXS (counted cross stitch) project in a quote worthy box on the mantel.  Makes it readily available, but not so messy by setting it on a TV tray which is my usual mode.

Looks so much better doesn't it!

Currently the stockings are hung, some decorations are out, and many gifts wrapped.  Who knows, perhaps I'll be ahead of the game this year.

The list of four for this week are:
  • Flowers stitched onto Lil Miss Shabby
  • 2 threads sewn onto Scaredy Sheep fob
  • Start the knitting the slouchy hat                                                                                                                           (Need to purchase some knitting needles, I have everyother size but these!)
  • Label PGD#1 advent calendar
Keep sane and warm,
Jane

Did you know that Schmetz needles has a "cheat sheet' of which needles are which for their color banded needles?
Here's a handy link where you can print out that chart in an 8x10 format or here for two 4x6 versions.
I printed out both for a reference though I do have a needle wheel where I can select which needle is in my machine whenever I change it and that way I always know what is in my machine.  It's very handy and when I see another sale with these will get a couple more for the granddaughter's machine and my portable Bernina too.  They are that handy!

Sounds doable..

Barbara from Cat Patches has been hosting the New FO for the 2012 calendar year and 2013 will be hosting it again.  Sounds like it could be fun and instead of always working on my UFOs this coule be  the  excuse  incentive to start a new project.  lol  What can I say?   Sometimes the muse within me just wants to play!  So I'm linking up.  Check out her blog post here explaining how it works and the giveaways she offers monthly when you remember to link it back to her blog at the end of the month.  Hopefully I'll be able to remember that!
Soon I'll add her widget to my side bar.  There are tutorials out there explaining how to do that.  I know Connie from Quilting by the River notoriety, shares many tutorials and information on saavy computer  tips besides quilting tips so I'll be checking that out shortly.

Another block for the lil' Miss Shabby is Done.

 Et viola-

September's block:

Have you ever been in the middle of a project and then that ah haa! moment arrives?
Well it just happened to me while working on the September block.

I started around  the 5th block of LMS construction  to do a floss toss.  Figuring out which color to put where especially with taking the neighboring block colors  into consideration.   I listed the DMC numbers on the printed out pattern  to make the  legend.

When selecting my colors for this project initially,  I pulled out all the thread colors from 5 storage containers of DMC threads.  Placing these thread bobbins onto binder rings so it kept them all together and secure until I could use them.

But while stitiching and removing some of the threads from the binder rings, it wasn't long before my thread bobbins turned to a mess.  Flipping bobbin over after bobbin to find the correct number written in for that part of each block.

Then it struck, how about containing them neatly so they are easier to find.
DUH!
So I changed it to this.

Since I didn't have an empty storage container, I emptied the one that stored my DMC rayon threads and used that for organizing my "current project".  You can't see the label with the angle that this photo was shot, but it clearly says Rayon on the front edg of the cover.

I plan on purchasing another container so I'll have a container for the current project  I'm workin on  with my next Michaels coupon.
It is so much neater and easier!  Now why didn't I think of that sooner?

Yesterday, PGD#1 had to turn in her school project where she created  a gingerbread cookie.  The school handed out the pattern and a piece of  brown 11x17 construction paper.  Each student had to embellish their own cookie.

First we hunted through my different boxes of trims and such so she selected the buttons and ric rac that she liked.  We came up with making a gingerbread girl and how it could be done.  She loves doing art and is patient about doing so.

Here she is and what she did.

This was started at my house and was finished at hers.  Notice the rubberband eyebrows?  Too cute!  So this was painted, colored with crayons, colored pencils, and a magic marker, glued, glittered, as well as all the add ons of the cotton balls, buttons, ric rac trim and broken rubber bands.  I think she did great job for 2nd grade!   Well done Honey!

DH and I had to travel to Albany for another Drs appointment mid week and thank goodness the weather was cooperative.   Because of that, we had a couple of days off with the grandchildren/preschool agenda that is the normal around here.    Thankfully we were able to finish up the Christmas shopping while we were downstate.  Ahh, that feels good.  The only bad part  is that with me doing all the driving, I'm in pain and rather useless for a couple of days after straining my back and arms driving.    I knew it would happen, but it was necessary so I will cope.

Getting off this computer now to get some things done around here.

Enjoy your day,
Jane

Still here on the Big EZ

I'm progressing along nicely on the Big EZ.   I think I've gone through about 12 bobbins full of thread so far and seems like it's taking longer than it should for a twin size quilt.   The next time I'm quilting on the DSM, my plan is to actually count how many bobbins I use.  During break times I've been spending quality time on the computer and have run across even more quilts that I want to make.  Lord knows where they'll end up but I am really trying too stay focused on this quilt before I'll allow myself to jump to something else.  Boy, that AADD that I self diagnosed  is really adding trials  and of course a spark to my life while I doing my crafts.    LOL

I did pick up my JOY from the framers. While on the track of getting UFO's finished around here, I was able to bring two CXS (counted Cross Stitch) pieces to two different framers. This one, Michaels did on a frame I had in for it.    Initially I was going to frame it myself, then reality and being afraid of messing it up shook me into bringing quickly to Felicia at Michaels.

Joyful Summer, designed by Country Cottage Needleworks
stitched on 28 count white linen
with the called for threads 2/2

She did a nice job with centering the design.  I just wish I had changed to a non glare  glass.  No matter how many times this photo was taken, there was a glare and flash.
Be it daylight, night time with indoor lamps on, or the camera flash, it continued to get the "flash on the glass" effect.  Talented, Aren't I?

This one was the best out of 5 shots!  You can click on it to get a larger view if you wish. I know my photography skills are lacking, but they will be getting better.  DH and I just went to an adult education class on photography and learned quite a few tips.  We only went for the first lass and the instructor, a local photographer and DJ said we could contact him at any time to ask additional questions.  It was a two night event initially with a week in between classes.  But because of Hurricane Sandy the first class had to be cancelled.  When it was scheduled, there was only 3 night break between classes and not enough time for us to play and practice what we learned in the first night.  Yippee!  Now I know how to turn off the camera  flash.
The camera  we are using is a Canon Powershot A590IS and it's an 8 megapixal/4X Zoom  which we've had for years.  I can see a new camera coming into this household soon, very very soon.  First things first though, Christmas shopping and the kitchen remodel need to be completed and paid for first.   We also were able to check out that all of the Nikkon lenses we have from our old 35mm manual Nikkon  will fit the new Nikkon digital cameras.  Good to know!  That will save quite a bit of mula so I can use it elsewhere.

I also was able to reorganize my beading stash recently.    It took about 12 hours (3 days)  to go through the copious amount of packages, little containers and organizers that were tucked away in several areas through out the home.    I consolidated, cleaned and laid out a plan how to get some of those UFOs completed while sorting.
Part of the plan is to attend a beading class after Thanksgiving to continue doing the Ice Bracelet I started with a friend well over a year ago.   I am intimitated to continue making this on my own and need the encouragement of more saavy beaders so with this already paid for and scheduled I can see this finishing up too.

While cleaning up this mess, I found a couple of kitted earrings that I wanted to make.  Staying true with the wish to finish more  projects I attempted the silver manipulations to make drops for pierced earring wires.  Eeeks!  E-gads...The result was too catywampus, so I tucked those in with the ICE Bracelet class parts and am hoping for  a refresher on that technique during that class too.  It's been ages since I've done any of that and it shows how rusty I am.

Besides that bit of kits I also ran across the 2 extra magnification lenses for the MagEyes I use for beading, CXS and even embroidery.   Another project is hatching in this evil brain of mine....

BUT STOP, I say!   Finish the quilting on the BIG EZ first!
Breathe........
Stay Calm and Carry On,
Jane

Progressing

There are no finished yet, but i am progressing on a couple of my projects. I actually got some quality stitching time in this past week for the BBD, Easter Parade. This is how it looks so far

.

A new project I started and am currently in the midst of is purging some of my magazines. You guessed it, no sewing on that table. I've purged about 25 mags and still have a couple of stacks to go as well as the magazine holder indexed paged from the last time I did this. I do save quilt patterns that appeal to me and techniques of how to do a specific technique besides templates for applique or quilt designs that I can see actually doing in my lifetime.

I guess a girl will do anything to postpone a UFO she dreads!

And what little sweetheart these Young cheerleaders were. They participated with a local school's cheerleading program. Of course that DGD#1 with a preschool friend. They were very eager and actually got into it and had fun. I am so glad that she wasn't a shrinking violet even though at age 5, I had expected her to be a bitof onoe. All the training of gymnastics, dance and schools are paying off. Even the routines she didn't know, she could follow along and learned them while on the floor, well enough to pull it off anyway.

The future is in very capable hands I think.

It's coming along.

Wasn't able to push through any WIPs or UFOs because of reorganizing. I have all the colored fabric that was in my stash cabinets all refolded with the 6" ruler method. But I think since I have "fluffed it" with the refolding it expanded! I still have all my white and ecrus yet to do. See the stack in the plastic tote.

While doing this, it's so much easier to see all of my fabrics. Since the shelves are deep enough for a stack of fat quarters besides the stacks of folded yardages I'll be able to conveniently move a stack of fabric to check out for colors or fabric in the next stack behind it. I had thought to order 6" x 24" pexiglass to wrap my bolts of fabric on, but for 6 pieces of this I was quoted a price of $75.00, that's more than I'm willing to spend for that. So I'll just make due with what is there. We were able to fit a shelf over my pattern storage boxes that way the fabric on bolts could be stored up above.

The 2 three drawer units that were placed next to my stash cabinets were intended to store my ongoing WIPs. Drawers are so much easier that totes stacked on top of each other. DUH! That way I could conveniently put away something and grab another project and try to stay neater while creating my "art". BUT with the fabric expansion, I'll now store my white's in the lower unit and the upper one has a drawer each for:

Bags - purse stuff,
charms and layer cakes and some kits
unique textures such as ironing fabric, old nylons, tulle, denim, silk, Ultrasuede, felt, you get the idea. There's not a lot of the latter but it's amazing how quickly it filled up. This is how it looks when facing my design wall. Nice clean line, I am feeling so proud.
Notice the 58 gallon tote (55Liter) in front of the design wall. This fabric still waiting for my attention. Not sure how much of it will fit in the drawer but any excess will be stored in a tote downstairs too. I won't mention how many toes DH has already carried down there. There really is too much, how did I let this happen. Boy has this been an eye opener for me.

See the stack of artbins storing the projects. It stacks nicely behind the sewing table. I have this towards the right back side, while on the far left side are UFOs of regular sewing projects. I should make the time and just sew them up. It is so much faster than a quilt and then it will be done.

The middle section on the back underside of the sewing table hides a couple of shoe shelves with shoe size totes of projects in kits and other wips besides my plethora of storage/plastic bags.

I was able to purge and reorganize the stabilizers, papers, plastic rolls and fusibles. What it looks like now:

Lastly, this shows the view as I sit in my chair. It's the lovely thread box DH gave me for Christmas about 15 years ago. I still adore it. Though I have too many threads to be contained in here and since I've restarted my obsession with cross stitch, I'm thinking I may reorganize my threads to be able to store my "specialty" threads in this box instead of different places still through out the house. The disadvantages of living in a small house, grrrr...
One great thing about this being placed here is I can also use it to step up to reach my stabilizers if needed. I don't want the top to be all scratched up though, it's still in pristine condition so I will probably continue to use the step stool. I do like things treated correctly.
Sorry for rambling on so. Can you tell I've been inspired and am loving this orderlyness that is becoming my sewing studio.

Looking for fabric...

With the recent finishes I was able to find some time to focus on cleaning up some of my sewing space(s). I am amazed by all the STUFF I have. So I have cleaned up and out quite a few bags and items around my work spaces. Many things reorganized and stored in a better manner. Here is an updated look at the doorway to my sewing studio. Much improved since this photo. Its a big improvement over what it was and it's hard to see it in the photos so it's not showing up that well but it's much better!

While looking on how best to arrange and store, I stumbled across my Lone Star Quilt UFO. The center area is done, the 1st and 3rd borders are cut as is the made binding, the only area that I need to get to is the reason it got shelved in the first place. I don't have enough of the background fabric.

That's the only piece of selvage I could get my hands on so I'm not sure of the designer or fabric line. Do you know where I could get some? Click on the picture and you can see it closeup.

Several years ago, while at a Pennsylvania quilt show, Seams Like Home designer, Joan Jones had her bird quilt on display in her vendor booth. The background fabric of it is the same fabric that I need. So when inquiring about where I could find more of it she said she would check when she got back home in 2 weeks and to give her a call. Long story storter, Yippee- she had 2 yards. So I gladly paid her for it. Then...the package never came. Major Bummer!

She kindly refunded the money and even went through her scrap bin to see if she had any of it there which she did so she mailed me the bits that she did have, but it's not enough.

I did purchase this fabric on the left awhile back and thought I might have to use it, but I am hopeful that someone out there will have some of my original fabic.

All of the paper piecing chain points are done and the corner section drafted chains are sewn and pressed. Just need about 1 yard more so I can finish that section of the second border thought I want to do an asymetrical appliqued vine in. This is a sketchinng of what I have in mind.

Let me know if you know where I can get this spotted/speckly fabric, I'd love to get 2 yards but any is better than none and thanks.

Happy Stitching,
Jane

Disappearing nine patch

Oh, on the organization of my studio- I found a 3 drawer unit not badly priced at a local retailer. I bougth 2 to stack on top of each other. I had tape measure in hand and knew the space available to help with this latest effort. I think it will work. Maybe just a hair off...........2 days ago, emptied out my messy corner near the design wall to "slip" this 3 drawer unit into. NO GO! Called son who lives next door and had the day off, please come and help, I thinking with a little muscular persuasion they'll nudge in quite nicely. NOPE! I need to shift all the cabinets on that wall 1" maybe 2" to make sure the drawer will be fully operational.
SO- I did the first short cabinet with the machine embroidery stuff, c/d and radio and dvd, software storage. Emptied it, cleaned it and moved it down. Today, I'll
do the next shorter cabinet with the TV, all quilt related books, gloves, boxes of hand quilting thread.....

My plan is to try to tackle one cabinet every day or two so I can fit in those drawers for easier storage. There were 6 plastic totes piled on one another and it seems like no matter what order they were in, I always needed the one on the bottom. With the drawers - yippee! No longer will it be a problem. The empty plastic totes I'll use for my decorator fabrics, dress making fabrics, to store down in the basement. I have other totes there already, but I actually do go down to locate fleece, battings, and other stuff when needed. So it's not a case of out of sight out of mind.

I started my disappearing nine patch that I've had kitted for over a year, see my fabric selected in the above photo. I actually took the time, ironed fabrics and cut them into the figured out 4-1/2" strips. Yesterday made my strip sets after helping out daughter and her family with transportion issues while her eyes were dilated. Actually did get them pressed too last night, but didn't subcut them. Off to do that now. PG#3, PGD#1 and DH are all taking a nap!

Oh I do love the sound of silence. Enjoy your day, I'm off to enjoy more of mine.

Embarassingly, I have enough!

What that well known adage: "THE CAMERA DOESN'T LIE".
Well it is with a very red face that I'll be posting pictures of my sewing room and the overflow that has happened because of my passion with needle work. Knowing I have enough or even too much and I need to get a handle on it.

So here it is...............MY SEWING ROOM:

The view as I walk into my sewing domain is the first photo and the view of the wall that is to my back while I sew is the second photo, of course I opened up the cabinet doors so you knew they weren't sitting there empty(wicked grin here):

These next 2 photos are of the view of the wall I face while sewing. The first picture is the cabinet that sets near my design wall. This holds my whites to black colored fabics, as well as Halloween and the Thirty's Reproduction fabrics. The second photo is a view of the center of the room where 2 more of fabric cabinets are. The center cabinet holds my greens to purples and also includes batiks. The far right cabinet is for my yellows to reds, besides novelty and childrens' fabrics. Further on the right (not pictured) of that wall, are 2 corner-windows which is where a shorter cabinet stands that holds the TV, DVD, C/D, cassette player.

These final 2 pictures show my design wall area near my fabric storage cabinets, both top and bottom.

It is a wreck! It's hard for me, who used to be a very detail specific and organized admit that this mess is mine and mine alone.

So that is my story and I'm sticking to it!
No, I'm truly posting these pictures to keep me real!
It seems that whenever my interest is peaked in whichever subject, I fall for it big time. Well, I've made this mess so I will be cleaning it up. Since it didn't happen overnight, I know it will take me a while to fix it. Now mind you, there are some more pictures of my messes, but I thought there is only so much a person can stand... so I plan on showing the before and after photo's when I get to them. That will help me continue to stay focused and to not relapse into my old self. Time will tell.

Got to run, I'm planning on working on the woven star table runner this evening. Stay Well.
